The PORT OF KIEL, a significant Baltic Sea port and logistics hub, partnered with HMF Smart Solutions and Airspan to deploy a 5G campus networks across its two key terminals, Ostuferhafen and Schwedenkai. This advanced infrastructure will serve as a backbone for the port’s digital transformation, optimizing cargo handling, traffic control, and logistics operations through real-time data transmissions. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), the project aims to streamline roll-on/roll-off traffic and boost overall operational efficiency.
Handling 7.9 million tons of cargo annually requires advanced systems to efficiently coordinate traffic, goods handling, and logistics processes. In addition, the large 564,000 square meter port facility needed seamless connectivity to manage both indoor and outdoor operations without interruptions. However, the existing infrastructure and network systems could not meet the demands of modern digital logistics, such as the need for real-time communication and data-driven decision-making.
HMF Smart Solutions deployed a comprehensive 5G campus network, integrating over 25 indoor and outdoor base stations to cover the 564,000 square meter PORT OF KIEL. This infrastructure enables real-time communication and optimization of cargo and vehicle movements, improving operational efficiency and reducing delays. Seamlessly integrated with the port’s existing systems, the 5G network supports future expansions and technological innovations, positioning the port for continued digital transformation and maintaining its leadership in European logistics.
